Calculus

Calculator

Calculus is such a bitch.

I'm gradually realizing that this semester will be my hardest one yet. I have a lot of shit on my plate. Calculus for one... which is a terrible menace... and two upper division psychs that compose the majority of my work load. This, along with my newspaper gig, will guarantee a very busy, probably stressful semester. Oh well... college was bound to get exponentially harder as I went, especially now that I'm trying to tackle another major along with psych: economics. Weee...

Dusk, HW, Parties

Apartments by Dusk

I've recently calmed down with my photo work and have picked up my camera sparingly these past couple of days. Honestly I felt like the thing was about to grow into my hand from constant use and I think my brain was getting taxed from having to use my eyes to creatively construct scenes 24/7. Which is not to say I haven't done any shooting. I just... haven't done much of it.

Ever since I can remember (I been poppin my collar) my work ethic has been terrible. I really don't know how I managed to get into this university. Of course I am not the first or only one to struggle with procrastinating. But this is what I was thinking about when I took this still life. Time keeps dripping away and I'm seemingly incapable of making use of it.
...And the only reason I took this was because I didn't want to immediately start on my psychology paper due the next morning.

Time Slips Away

I've been snapping pics at parties ever since I started this hobby, and have never taken any "good" party pics, try as I might. I'm pretty much convinced now that I can't operate as a photographer while intoxicated. It's a real shame.

Busy Week

PHEW. Last week was very very very busy. Lots of school, lots of wacky administrative problems, lots of picture taking, lots of parties, lots of drama, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc... Also, yes I guess the big news of last week is that I made The Daily Texan as a photographer! I felt like a loser cuz I couldn't hide my smile for a minute at orientation.

My second tryout day was Wednesday. I shot a forum on Austin's expanding rail system. I gotta say... working in low light is not my forte I've realized. My favorite environment to shoot in is outdoors running around, getting dirty and sweaty and making my lenses squint.
Metro Forum

Wild art is fun to shoot. The people at the Texan define wild art as any "cool" or "interesting" shot with a person in the frame. So when they ask that all of us shoot some, I was pretty stoked because that's what I've been doing this past year for fun.

I've been doing a looooot of hanging out with Kathy since school started. She's the shit. I can't help but love her nerdiness and excitement about everything. She also dresses cute everyday.

Printed

Holy shit! One of my pictures ran in The Daily Texan today!

My first tryout was on Friday. The assignment was an information session for disabled students at UT. I learned a lot about being a disabled university student, and the challenges they face at UT. A discussion was even held on dating challenges.
After shooting the event, I was really worried I didn't snap any good frames.
I really can't express the relief I felt seeing the editors in the office liking my shoot. Anyway, the next morning I grabbed a copy of The Texan and there it was, printed in black and white on page 6. I got a text from Alicia saying "omg your picture is in the paper!". I would have skipped to class if the campus wasn't so damn large.

First (serious) Shoot of the Semester

I made my first attempt at serious pictures today since school started. I grabbed my camera bag this morning, and snapped around campus on the way to class. I got some good advice to practice shooting a bit before my tryout days for The Daily Texan. This isn't my strongest set, and I really have some kinks to work out before Friday. Unfortunately taking pictures doesn't seem to be analogous to riding bikes, as many other things always are (driving a car, typing, loading a bowl etc.).

Thankfully it was an insanely gorgeous day (though hotter than Hades) so at least my pictures got that going for them. Oh, and it's also not so bad when the beautiful ladies of The University of Texas grace us with their sun dresses and short-shorts.
