The roommates and I just moved into our new apartment. I am totally stoked about this year, and all the things I plan to do. Bring it on, Austin!

Southeast Asia Pt. 3

We also spent 4 days in Hong Kong. I absolutely fell in love with the city. It is the most gorgeous, interesting city I've ever been to, and I definitely plan on going back on my later travels. Hong Kong is an insane mix of European and Asian. Tall whites mingle effortlessly in a sea of Chinese and Polynesian, and everyone is attractive, powerful, and wealthy. Hong Kong gets Miguel's Coolest City award. We stayed with my aunt, who lives in a flat in a highrise located in the heart of Hong Kong. The view out my window was... the shit.

We also made our way over to Macau, another "Special Administrative Region" of China. Tourists like to refer to Macau as the Las Vegas of China. We visited some big hotels, and explored the city a bit.

Macau

Macau was a Portuguese colony, just as Hong Kong was a British one, so Portuguese influence is very prominent in Macau. A special treat there are these delicious cheesy pastry things (I forgot the name), and I frequently saw locals picking up dozens and dozens of these from bakeries.

Back to The Philippines...
One of the last things I did there was go to a cockfight with my dad. While he was growing up, a major part of his activities and interest (along with most other Filipino males) was attending cockfights. I've been to these things before on past Philippine trips and they're always fun to watch. I know PETA shits about animal fighting, but I never see cruelty or malice displayed at cockfights in The Philippines. However I'm sure that's just my Filipino side talking.

Southeast Asia Pt. 2

We attended my cousin Nino's wedding. It was an absolutely gorgeous ceremony. His older sister organized the entire thing, and with a modest budget put together a wedding that looked like a million dollars. I was apart of the wedding (ceremoniously lighting candles) so I did not snap a ton of frames during the ceremony.

asdThe only touristy thing we did in The Philippines was to take a weekend trip to south Luzon to visit the Filipino equivalent of Disneyworld. We made a detour to Mt. Taal, a dormant(?) volcano. We even took horsie rides to the top of the volcano. Unfortunately my camera ran out of juice upon arriving at the top (grrrr). The random Mt. Taal trip was ridiculously fun.

Southeast Asia Pt. 1

My family and I spent 5 weeks in The Philippines this summer. It was a blast. I had meant to keep this blog regularly updated with shots and insight throughout the trip, but I did not have internet access at my house- which made me lazy to do any work on this blog. Anyway, here are some grabs from the trip:

We stay in The Philippines to see family once every three years. It's a trip that always brings my family super close, and I appreciate the intimacy the trips provide.

One of the first things we did there was to travel to my dad's birthtown and attend the annual St. Peter festival. The little town completely explodes with vendor activity, and every household big or small hosts parties with tons to eat and drink. The town's ancient church is the center of activity.

Two Portraits

Here are two pictures I took yesterday. I realized I haven't been posting a whole lot on here recently, so this is my timid attempt to get back in the habit.

"KSU"
Andrew's mom asked him to give the dog a haircut. He tried to shave "KSU" (Kent State U.) into her side, and gave her a Mohawk type thing with a crooked strip of fur running down her back.

"This uh... this didn't turn out quite the way I wanted it to..."

Back to School
It's the end of the summer, and everyone is leaving again for school. Alyssa and I went to dinner and then it was "see ya later" till thanksgiving or if one of us decides to visit the other.
